Ghost Walls and Sign History

Early in May 2024, dozens of sign artists from across the continent converged on the American Sign Museum (Cincinnati) to contribute their talents to the museum’s forthcoming “Main Street” expansion. Our very own Noella Cotnam was one of the hand-selected sign artists invited to lend her talent to the legendary archive of sign history in America.

Ghost signs are old, hand-painted advertising signs that have been preserved on buildings for a long time. They are often found in urban areas on high streets, but can also be hidden in alleyways or on rooftops. Noella was tasked to design and render a nostalgic look into the past an auto parts and service station ad.

The current extent of the Main Street exhibit allows guests to view various signs along the avenue of a business district, complete with shopfronts and decorated windows. Over the course of a week, the sign artists painted, gilded and carved signs, restored old pieces and created new “antiques.” The new wing of the museum is scheduled to open in mid-July. Signs of the Times was invited for an inside look, up close with the artists in action, and we’re happy to share some sneak peeks here.

Walldog Mural Festival in Mount Barker, Australia

I attended the very first Walldog meet in Allerton, Iowa back in 1993. I fell in love with the notion that sharing local history on town buildings could revitalize and inspire a community for years to come.

In 2001, my company hosted “Walldog Jam” in Cornwall, ON Canada, where twelve murals were created over a five day period! Since then, I’ve traveled across Canada and the US, tasked with designing historical murals and leading teams of volunteers - professionals and even some that have never held a brush before - to complete a huge piece of art in just a few days.

Next up? Australia. Mount Barker is in Western Australia, and after a couple of years of postponement, a handful of Canadian and American Walldogs finally made the trek and got to work.

The Australian ABC National News picked up the story and stopped by to get the scoop.

Mural painting collective the Walldogs came to Keene, NH for their 2019 festival to paint 16 historical murals in the downtown. Hear from the painters themselves as they create these long-lasting art pieces over the course of three days. The festival organizers also discuss the process of bringing the Walldogs to town and selecting subjects for the town to vote on for the murals. Keene's strong sense of community mixes with the Walldogs' love of sharing public art, and the results are the Magical History Tour.
